Global EV growth slows amid declining China, US registrations

July 28, 2026 (MLN): Global registrations of fully electric vehicles (BEVs) continued to increase during the first half of the year, though the pace of expansion slowed significantly as demand weakened in key markets, according to a report by consultancy PwC.

The study, which analyzed 43 major automotive markets, showed that approximately 6.6 million battery electric vehicles were registered worldwide in the first six months of the year, representing a 9% year-on-year increase, according to APP.

Despite the growth, the rate of expansion eased considerably compared with previous periods. Global BEV registrations had surged by more than one-third during the first half of 2025 and increased by nearly one-third over the full year.

China, the world's largest electric vehicle market, was the primary contributor to the slowdown. BEV registrations in the country declined 5% year-on-year to just under 3.6 million units during the first half of the year.

However, the report noted that China's EV market showed signs of recovery in the second quarter. With the broader automotive market contracting, battery electric vehicles accounted for 44% of all new vehicle registrations in the country during the quarter.

The United States also recorded weaker demand for fully electric vehicles. Around 460,000 BEVs were registered in the first half of the year, marking a 22% decline compared with the same period in 2025.

Fully electric models represented only 6% of total new vehicle registrations in the U.S. market, highlighting slower consumer adoption.
