Fertilizer offtake rises 43% YoY in Dec 2024

January 16, 2025 (MLN): The country’s overall nutrient offtake in December 2024 was 621 thousand tonnes, showing a 42.9% increase compared to December 2023, the latest monthly report of fertilizer offtake issued by the National Fertilizer Development Company (NDFC) showed.

Among the nutrients, nitrogen, phosphate, and potash offtake increased significantly by 50.7%, 9.3%, and 0.8% on a year on year basis.

Urea, DAP

Urea offtake was 991 thousand tonnes which increased by 57.9% while DAP offtake was 137 thousand tonnes which decreased by 0.7% over December 2023.

Fertilizer production and imported supplies

Total domestic fertilizer production during December 2024 was 835 thousand tonnes.

Urea and DAP production was 590 and 76 thousand tonnes, respectively.

Production of other products i.e., CAN, NP, SSP and SOP was 81, 78, 7.7 and 2.5 thousand tonnes, respectively.

Total imported supplies were 25.8 thousand tonnes comprising of MAP only.

Supply/Demand Situation

Total urea availability during December 2024 was 1,345,000 tons, which comprised 756,000 tons of previous month leftover and 590,000 tons domestic production.

Urea offtake during December 2024 was 991,000 tons, leaving a closing balance of 360,000 tons

Total availability of DAP during December 2024 was 240,000 tons, which included 138,000 tons stock of previous month, and 76,000 tons domestic production.

Its offtake was 137,000 tons leaving closing balance of 102,000 tons.

Domestic prices

The price of urea (sona), urea (other), and CAN decreased slightly by 0.5%, 1.1%, and 0.5%, respectively, during December 2024 as compared with the previous month.

On the other hand, Prices of phosphate fertilizer products such as DAP, NP, and NPK decreased by 0.8%, 0.6%, and 1.1%, respectively.

The average price of urea (sona), urea (other), and DAP was Rs. 4,552, Rs. 4,398, and Rs. 11,936 per 50 kg bag, respectively.

International prices

The price of urea in the Chinese market was quoted at $10 per tonne in December 2024, while in the Arabian Gulf, it rose by $5 per tonne.

Urea prices were quoted as $243-260 and $335-360 per tonne FOB bulk for China and the Arabian Gulf, respectively.

DAP prices in Morocco decreased by $12.5 per tonne, while prices in China remained stable. In December 2024, prices ranged from $585-615 per tonne of FOB bulk in Morocco and  $615-620 per tonne of FOB bulk in China.

MAP and TSP bulk prices were $570-580 and $460-510 per tonne FOB, respectively.

Ex-Karachi price of imported urea ranged between Rs4,782 and 6,617 per 50 kg bag, while price of imported DAP was in the range of Rs10,737 to 11,228 per 50 kg bag.
