Weekly inflation rises 0.38%

July 18, 2025 (MLN): Pakistan's short-term inflation increased by 0.38% compared to the previous week, while it fell by 1.61% compared to the same period last year, the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reported on Friday.

During the week, out of 51 items, prices of 22 (43.14%) items increased, 09 (17.65%) items decreased and 20 (39.22%) items remained stable.


Major increase is observed in the prices Chicken (8.31%), Eggs (5.87%), Diesel (4.15%), Petrol (2.00%), Onions (1.76%), Garlic (1.70%), Potatoes (1.46%), Firewood (0.49%), Cooked Daal (0.35%), Mutton & Powdered Milk (0.31%) each and Cigarettes (0.25%).

On the other hand, decrease is observed in the prices of Tomatoes (9.34%), Bananas (1.57%), LPG (0.95%), Pulse Gram (0.31%), Pulse Moong (0.30%), Wheat Flour (0.25%), Cooking Oil 5 Litre & Sugar (0.21%) each and Rice IRRI-6/9 (0.05%).


The year on year trend depicts decrease of 1.61%. Major decrease is observed in the prices of Onions (48.65%), Tomatoes (48.44%), Electricity Charges for Q1 (37.62%), Garlic (23.17%), Wheat Flour (22.56%), Pulse Mash (20.67%), Tea Lipton (17.93%), Potatoes (13.69%), Pulse Masoor (9.02%) and Petrol (1.24%).

While major increase is observed in the prices of Ladies Sandal (55.62%), Sugar (27.76%), Pulse Moong (17.91%), Beef (14.62%), Gur (12.50%), Vegetable Ghee 2.5 Kg (12.46%), Vegetable Ghee 1 Kg (12.32%), Chicken (11.77%), Firewood (10.77%), Bananas (9.67%), Lawn Printed (7.32%) and Georgette (7.20%). 

The lowest income group experienced a weekly increase of 0.13%, while the inflation for the highest income group up by 0.46%.

On a yearly basis, analysis of SPI change across different income segments showed that SPI remained across all quantiles ranging between 3.14% and 0.45%.

Yearly SPI for the Lowest Income Group decreased by 2.17% while the highest income group decreased by 0.45%.

The average price of Sona urea stood at Rs4,429 per 50 kg bag, up by 0.21% from last week’s price, and a 7.30% decrease from last year.

Meanwhile, the average Cement price fell to Rs1,402 per 50 kg bag, which is 0.71% lower than the previous week, and 4.30% lower than prices last year.

PBS calculates short-term inflation using the SPI on a weekly basis to assess the price movement of essential commodities at shorter interval of time so as to review the price situation in the country.

SPI comprises 51 essential items collected from 50 markets in 17 cities of the country.
