Bank deposit rate rises by 12bps in Sep

October 19, 2026 (MLN): The return on bank deposits has increased by 12 basis points to 4.29% in September 2026 compared to the deposit rate of 4.17% last month, according to the latest official data.

On a yearly basis, the weighted average rate paid for deposits by the banking sector has decreased by 803bps compared to the return of 12.32% last year.

Meanwhile, the lending rate for all scheduled banks stood at 11.89%, down 10bps compared to August. While it rose 7bps compared to the same month of last year.

Accordingly, the banking sector spread decreased by 22bps to 760bps in September 2026 compared to a spread of 782bps last month.

However, the real deposit rate, after adjusting for inflation, stood at -4.26%, which is lower compared to last month's -3.98%, while in September 2025 it was 1.94%

The real lending rate stood at 3.34%, which is lower compared to last month's 3.84%, while it fell from 8.34% in SPLY.
