Weekly SPI decreases by 0.11%

June 13, 2025 (MLN): Pakistan's short-term inflation decreased by 0.11% compared to the previous week, while it fell by 1.41% compared to the same period last year, the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reported on Friday.

During the week, out of 51 items, prices of 15 (29.41%) items increased, 09 (17.65%) items decreased and 27 (52.94%) items remained stable.

The SPI for the current week ended on June 12, 2025 decreased by 0.11%. Decrease is observed in the prices of Chicken (11.32%), Garlic (5.69%), Pulse Mash (1.14%), Pulse Masoor (0.43%), Pulse Gram (0.21%), Cooking Oil 5 litre & Vegetable Ghee 2.5kg (0.20%) each, Wheat Flour (0.05%) and LPG (0.02%).

On the other hand, major increase is observed in the prices of Tomatoes (19.73%), Potatoes (9.11%), Onions (3.23%), Bananas (2.25%), Powdered Milk (0.73%), Eggs (0.67%), Gur (0.52%), Curd & Rice Basmati Broken (0.25%) each, Vegetable Ghee 1kg (0.20%), Sugar (0.18%) and Pulse Moong (0.15%).

The year on year trend depicts decrease of 1.41%. Major decrease is observed in the prices of Onions (61.86%), Electricity Charges for Q1 (41.63%), Garlic (30.99%), Tomatoes (22.87%), Pulse Mash (19.18%), Tea Lipton (17.93%), Potatoes (16.49%), Wheat Flour (14.10%), Chicken (8.04%), Pulse Masoor (6.13%), Diesel (5.68%) and Petrol (5.41%).

While major increase is observed in the prices of Ladies Sandal (55.62%), Eggs (31.41%), Pulse Moong (30.53%), Powdered Milk (24.73%), Sugar (23.76%), Bananas (16.18%), Beef (15.75%), Vegetable Ghee 2.5Kg (13.33%), Vegetable Ghee 1Kg (12.71%), Firewood (10.81%), Lawn (10.45%) and Cooked Daal (9.90%).

The lowest income group experienced a weekly increase of 0.15%, while the inflation for the highest income group down by 0.18%.

On a yearly basis, analysis of SPI change across different income segments showed that SPI remained across all quantiles ranging between 2.78% and 0.36%.

Yearly SPI for the Lowest Income Group decreased by 1.59% while the highest income group decreased by 0.36%.

The average price of Sona urea stood at Rs4,455 per 50 kg bag, down by 0.11% from last week’s price, and a 6.02% decrease from last year.

Meanwhile, the average Cement price fell to Rs1,410 per 50 kg bag, which is 0.08% lower than the previous week, and 11.95% higher than prices last year.

PBS calculates short-term inflation using the SPI on a weekly basis to assess the price movement of essential commodities at shorter interval of time so as to review the price situation in the country.

SPI comprises 51 essential items collected from 50 markets in 17 cities of the country.
