Trump, Xi sit down in Beijing, can it last?

May 14, 2026 (MLN): USA-China relations took center stage this week as a two-day summit got underway, bringing together the world's two largest economies to tackle a packed agenda of divisive issues.
Trade
disputes, tariff friction, the future of Taiwan, and Iran's growing regional
influence are all on the table as both nations engage in what many are calling
one of the most consequential rounds of diplomacy in recent memory.
President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping
formally opened the talks in Beijing on Thursday, setting a cautiously
optimistic tone from the outset.
President Trump expressed confidence that the bilateral
relationship would reach new heights, while President Xi struck a more
philosophical note, cautioning that both powers must consciously work to avoid
the Thucydides Trap, the historically observed tendency for a rising and ruling
power to slide into armed conflict, according to CNBC.
The two leaders, no strangers to each other after President Trump's first visit to China back in 2017, wrapped up their opening session within the hour and are due to continue negotiations through midday Friday.
President Trump did not make the trip alone. Accompanying him is a high-profile delegation of executives from some of America's most powerful companies, including Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, signaling that business and technology are very much at the heart of these discussions.
It is anticipated that the summit could conclude with major announcements, including large Chinese orders for American planes and soybeans, a tangible sign of whether the two sides can translate diplomatic goodwill into real economic outcomes.
With the world watching intently, both Washington and Beijing face the challenge of bridging deep and long-standing differences that have shaped the global order for decades.
