July 07, 2026 (MLN): A routine scan at Karachi's International Mail Office uncovered what appeared to be ordinary toy shipments from Thailand, but inside the parcels, customs officials found 12 kilograms of marijuana worth an estimated Rs366.2 million.
This foiled a major drug smuggling attempt through Pakistan's international postal system.
According to a statement issued by Pakistan Customs, the seizure was made on July 4 during routine scanning operations at the International Mail Office (IMO), Karachi, where two parcels arriving from Bangkok, Thailand, raised suspicion during the screening process.
The consignments had been declared as containing plastic car toys, Lego sets, model kit paper, and wooden rocks.
However, Preventive Officer Zahid Hussain conducted a detailed physical examination after suspicious indicators were detected during scanning.
The inspection revealed that the parcels had been cleverly modified to conceal 12 kilograms of marijuana inside plastic toy boxes.
The narcotics were recovered in two separate consignments weighing 7 kilograms and 5 kilograms, respectively.
Pakistan Customs estimated the market value of the seized drugs at approximately Rs366.2 million.
Following the recovery, the contraband was handed over to the Directorate of Enforcement & Compliance (Headquarters), Karachi, for legal action.
Authorities have also registered a First Information Report (FIR) and launched an investigation to trace all individuals and networks involved in the attempted smuggling operation.
Pakistan Customs said the successful interception demonstrates the department's vigilance and operational preparedness in preventing the misuse of international logistics and postal channels for narcotics trafficking.
The department reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening intelligence-led enforcement operations and ensuring strict implementation of customs laws to combat transnational crime, protect national security, and safeguard public safety.
