September 04, 2025 (MLN): The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA) and the Pakistan Microfinance Network (PMN) on Wednesday agreed to work together to improve financial facilities for micro-enterprises in Pakistan.

A meeting was held at the SMEDA Head Office between SMEDA Chief Executive Officer Socrat Aman Rana and PMN Chief Executive Officer Syed Mohsin Ahmed, accompanied by their expert teams, to identify key areas of cooperation.

The discussion focused on collaboration for strengthening the understanding of the micro-enterprise landscape, particularly their financial literacy needs and access to finance, with an emphasis on data sharing between the two organizations.

Socrat Aman Rana emphasized PMN’s significant role in advancing financial inclusion and highlighted the alignment of both organizations’ missions in supporting underserved micro-enterprises.

He noted that SMEs contribute 40% to Pakistan’s GDP, account for 78% of non-agriculture employment, and generate 25% of exports. Out of approximately 7 million economic establishments in the country, 95% employ fewer than 10 people, while 28% of households engage in home-based economic activity.

He added that Pakistan has over 11 million active loan borrowers with an average loan size of Rs55,000, showing the scale of micro-enterprise activity, and stressed the importance of uplifting the microfinance sector, especially for small farmers, agriculture, and livestock.

Syed Mohsin Ahmed stressed the need for joint efforts to strengthen microfinancing, stating that micro-enterprises can grow into small enterprises through combined support in finance and business development services.

He expressed PMN’s commitment to partnering with SMEDA to improve access to finance and other services, with the aim of creating a meaningful impact on the sector.
