November 24, 2025 (MLN):  Pakistan emphasizes its drive to boost regional connectivity, enhance maritime safety and security, and expand the blue economy as it seeks a seat on the IMO Council.

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry has arrived in the United Kingdom to attend the 34th IMO Assembly and participate in the Council elections, reinforcing Pakistan’s ambition to establish itself as a regional maritime hub through sustainable development and port modernization, said a press release issued.

Pakistan’s active participation reflects its strategic priorities, including upgrading port infrastructure, strengthening maritime governance, and advancing environmentally responsible practices aligned with international standards.

The IMO Assembly, the organization’s highest decision-making forum, will run from November 24 to December 3, 2025, with Council elections scheduled for November 28.

Pakistan is contesting for a Category C seat for the 2026–27 term on the 40-member Council, which oversees the IMO’s work.

Newly elected members will meet in December to elect the Chair and Vice-Chair.

Reiterating Pakistan’s commitment to global maritime cooperation, the minister said the campaign aims to ensure a sustained role in shaping international maritime policy.
