December 03, 2025 (MLN): Pakistan has taken a significant step to
strengthen regional economic cooperation by signing the D-8 Protocol on Dispute
Settlement Mechanism.
The move is aimed at reinforcing the organization’s
institutional framework and facilitating the operationalization of the D-8
Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA), which is expected to boost trade flows and
long-term economic engagement among member countries, according to a press
release issued.
At the Fourth Meeting of the D-8 Trade Ministers Council in
Cairo, Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Commerce, Jam Kamal Khan, urged member
states to embrace opportunities in digital trade, sustainable development, and
technology-driven services.
He highlighted the importance of stronger institutional
linkages in customs, logistics, and standardization to unlock the bloc’s
regional trade potential.
Mr. Khan also welcomed Azerbaijan as the ninth member of the
D-8, expressing optimism that its inclusion would enhance the organization’s
collective economic strength.
He emphasized private-sector engagement, joint ventures, and
sectoral partnerships as key drivers of regional growth.
The Minister called for investments in digital
infrastructure, cross-border e-commerce, and innovation-led initiatives, while prioritizing
sustainable development areas such as food security, textiles, agriculture, and
energy.
He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to advancing the D-8 agenda and transforming the region into a dynamic hub of trade, development, and opportunity.
