Pakistan invites Shanghai Electric to boost investment in energy network

September 16, 2025 (MLN): Pakistan has invited Shanghai Electric to expand its investment in the modernization of the country’s transmission and distribution network.
The invitation was extended by President Asif Ali Zardari during a meeting with Chairman Wu Lei at the company’s headquarters in Shanghai.
The President was accompanied by First Lady Bibi Aseefa Bhutto Zardari, Chairman Pakistan Peoples Party Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, and Senator Saleem Mandviwalla.
Chairman Wu Lei briefed the visiting delegation on Shanghai Electric’s projects in Pakistan, including its role in Thar Coal, nuclear energy, and coal-fired power plants.
The President appreciated the company’s contribution in addressing Pakistan’s energy needs, creating jobs, and supporting socio-economic growth.
He highlighted the importance Pakistan attaches to the development of the Thar Coal project and its coal-gasification potential, assuring that any pending issues would be resolved amicably.
The CEO of Shanghai Electric thanked the Government of Pakistan for ensuring security for its employees, while the President reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to further enhance security for Chinese workers.
During the visit, the delegation was also briefed on Shanghai Electric’s history and achievements. Founded in 1902, the company is now recognized globally for its innovations in energy, power, and industrial systems.
The President also witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding for establishing a Coal Gasification Plant in Thar, Sindh.
The agreement was signed between CEO Coal Gasification and Manufacturing (Pvt) Ltd, Shahid Tawawalla and CEO Sino Sindh Resources (Pvt) Ltd / Shanghai Electric, Lin Jigen.
This marks the first coal gasification and fertilizer project based on Thar Coal, aimed at meeting energy demands while strengthening the agriculture sector.
The ceremony was also attended by Sindh Ministers Sharjeel Memon and Syed Nasir Shah, Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Jiang Zaidong, and Pakistan’s Ambassador to China Khalil Hashmi.
