July 11, 2025 (MLN): Meta has joined hands with Pakistan’s Ministry of IT and Telecommunication (MoITT), Higher Education Commission (HEC), and National Computing Education Accreditation Council (NCEAC) to roll out a nationwide AI training initiative aimed at equipping university faculty with critical artificial intelligence skills.

The program, discussed at a high-level meeting chaired by Federal IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja in Islamabad, introduces a two-track approach.

It will provide AI soft skills training for over 1,000 non-technical faculty and AI hard skills certifications, including Meta’s LLaMA credentials via Coursera, for 250 to 500 technical faculty members across Pakistan.

“Artificial Intelligence is not just a technical tool but a transformative force reshaping education, health, agriculture, and governance,” said Minister Khawaja, pledging the ministry’s full support for the initiative’s rollout, integration with the upcoming National AI Policy, and alignment with broader digital skills efforts.

Meta’s delegation, led by Sarim Aziz, Director of South and Central Asia Public Policy, underscored the company’s commitment to advancing digital literacy and AI capacity in Pakistan through public-private-academic collaboration.

Looking ahead, the Minister proposed expanding the partnership to include student-focused AI training, content localization in Urdu and regional languages, and embedding AI ethics and safety frameworks.

She also floated the idea of launching joint dashboards to track progress and establishing a long-term AI Faculty Development Fund.

The initiative is seen as a model of public-private-academic synergy, designed to prepare Pakistan’s higher education sector and, ultimately, its workforce for the global digital economy.
