May 07, 2026 (MLN): A Japanese space technology startup is preparing to launch a robotic companion inspired by the iconic “Haro” character from the legendary anime series Mobile Suit Gundam to the International Space Station (ISS) by next spring.

The ambitious project is being led by Space Entry Co., a startup headquartered in Tsukuba, widely known as one of Japan’s leading science and technology hubs.

The company aims to test whether the spherical robot, dubbed “Everyone’s Haro,” can function effectively in space by moving independently in microgravity and interacting with astronauts as a communication partner, according to APP.

The robot’s appearance was designed by renowned mechanical designer Kunio Okawara, best known for creating the original Haro character and other mecha designs in the Gundam universe.

According to the company, the robot will be sent to the Japanese Experiment Module “Kibo” aboard the ISS, where it will gather valuable operational data for future autonomous robotic systems in space missions.

The compact robot measures approximately 21 centimeters in diameter and is constructed from aluminum.

Unlike conventional robotic systems, it will maneuver entirely through an internal propeller mechanism, with propulsion outlets positioned in its cheeks to allow movement in multiple directions under zero-gravity conditions.

To improve operational safety, the robot will feature obstacle-detection sensors capable of automatically halting movement when objects are nearby. It will also include a built-in camera and microphone to enable communication with astronauts aboard the ISS.

Additionally, the robot’s LED-powered eyes will allow it to express simple visual emotions and signals through blinking patterns, recreating some of the charm associated with the beloved anime character.

Public interest in the project has already proven strong. A crowdfunding campaign launched on April 14 surpassed its initial fundraising target of 3m yen (approximately $19,000) within just three days, attracting support from around 200 backers.

Supporters are being offered opportunities to participate directly in the project’s development journey, including attending launch-related events, while others can receive limited-edition merchandise tied to the mission.

Speaking at a press conference earlier this year, Space Entry President Ryoichi Kumagai said the initiative could help make space exploration more accessible to the public.

“We hope this project becomes a gateway for more people to engage with space development,” Kumagai said.
