Is another round of US-Iran talks being planned?

April 14, 2026 (MLN): Diplomatic
efforts between the United States and Iran failed to achieve a breakthrough
after lengthy negotiations, but talks are not yet conclusively over, indicating
that further engagement remains possible in the coming days.
President Donald Trump is still willing to resume
face-to-face negotiations soon if he assesses that Tehran is prepared to meet
Washington’s key conditions.
His administration is also weighing the possibility of
arranging another in-person meeting with Iranian representatives before the
current ceasefire period ends on April 21, although officials stress that plans
remain preliminary and no final decision has been made.
CNN reported, that President Trump’s advisers are
actively discussing potential dates and venues for a second round of direct
talks, depending on how diplomatic developments unfold in the near term.
The report added
that preparations are being kept flexible in case momentum builds quickly.
Tensions remain high, as both sides continue to disagree
on core issues, particularly the duration of any suspension of Iran’s uranium
enrichment program.
While discussions have included proposals for a temporary
halt, negotiators have not been able to agree on a timeframe acceptable to both
parties.
Meanwhile, the situation on the ground has further
complicated diplomacy, with the Strait of Hormuz still effectively closed and
the United States imposing a blockade on Iranian ports earlier this week.
US officials view the pressure campaign as a way to push
Tehran back to the negotiating table, while Iranian officials believe they
retain leverage amid ongoing regional disruptions.
Despite the strained environment, officials involved in
the process say backchannel communication continues, and there is still
cautious optimism that a diplomatic off-ramp could be reached.
Sentiment was shaped by U.S. Vice President JD Vance’s
remarks that any further progress in negotiations now rests with Iran,
following inconclusive talks over the weekend.
He said Washington had “put a lot on the table” and
indicated that any potential agreement would depend on Tehran meeting key U.S.
conditions, particularly those related to its nuclear program
Some discussions have even considered extending the
current ceasefire timeline to allow more time for progress.
The most recent round of negotiations, which lasted 21
hours and took place in Islamabad, involved high-level intermediaries from
countries including Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt, and Oman.
Other potential venues discussed for future talks include Geneva, Vienna, Istanbul, and again Islamabad, depending on how the situation develops.
