BOP stock rallied 3x on volume before the 'News' broke

August 10, 2026 (MLN): On Wednesday, August 5, an ordinary trading session on the Pakistan Stock Exchange quietly turned extraordinary. Bank of Punjab's counter, which had spent weeks drifting in a tight, unremarkable band, suddenly came alive, buyers piling in at nearly double the stock's normal turnover.
By Thursday, the volume had almost tripled. By Friday, the stock was printing fresh highs.
Nobody outside a small circle knew why. The Bank of Punjab's board would not formally meet to approve anything until that very Friday afternoon.
The public would not learn what had been decided until the following Monday morning.
By then, the rally was already over.
This is the story of a Rs30 billion capital injection, and a stock market that appears to have found out about it days before it was supposed to.
The Bank of Punjab told the Pakistan Stock Exchange this morning that the Punjab government will inject up to Rs30 billion into the bank through a fresh issuance of ordinary shares.
By the time that disclosure landed, the market had already spent the better part of a week trading as if it knew.
An examination of BOP's daily price and volume data shows the stock's sharpest gains and heaviest turnover in over a month arrived in the three trading sessions immediately preceding the board decision, not after the news became public, but before it.
According to a filing signed by Company Secretary Kamran Hafeez, BOP's Board of Directors approved the capital injection at its 334th Emergent meeting on August 7.
Under the terms disclosed, the Punjab government will subscribe to new ordinary shares, issued outside the standard rights-issue route, in two tranches: up to Rs20 billion by December 31, 2026, and the remaining balance by June 30, 2027.
The issue price was fixed at Rs38.20 per share, with a built-in escalator: should the market price exceed that level by the time shares are actually issued, the applicable price rises to the prevailing market rate plus a 5% premium.
The transaction still requires shareholder approval at an Extraordinary General Meeting, along with regulatory sign-off from the State Bank of Pakistan and the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan.
What the Tape Shows
BOP's trading data tells a different, earlier story.

Through late July, BOP traded in an unremarkable band on ordinary volume. That changed abruptly on Wednesday, August 5, two full trading sessions before the board convened, when turnover nearly doubled the monthly average.
The following day, Thursday, August 6, volume surged to 66 million shares, nearly triple the baseline and the heaviest single session in over a month, as the stock gained more than 3.5% to close at Rs36.00.
Volume stayed elevated at more than double normal on Friday, August 7, the day the board actually signed off on the transaction, with the stock touching a fresh high of Rs36.85 intraday.
By today, the day the material information was finally made public, both price and volume had cooled. The stock was trading around Rs35.75, and turnover, at 9.4 million shares as of the market close, was lighter than in almost any session of the entire run-up.
Reading the Pattern
Over three trading sessions, August 5, 6, and 7, BOP shares gained close to 9%, on cumulative volume of roughly 158 million shares, more than six times what the stock would ordinarily trade in a comparable three-day span.
The single largest-volume session of the period and the stock's freshest high both fell on days before the public had any confirmed knowledge of the board's deliberations.
Pakistan's Securities Act requires that price-sensitive information reach the market without delay once it exists.
A pre-disclosure volume and price pattern of this magnitude, concentrated so tightly around the date of the actual board decision, is the kind of signature that exchange surveillance systems and regulators are designed to flag for further review.
It does not, on its own, establish that information was improperly shared ahead of the public filing; heavy trading can also stem from market speculation, technical positioning, or coincidence.
The Price Gap That Matters Now
At today's level of Rs35.75, BOP shares sit roughly 6-7% below the Rs38.20 fixed issue price the board has set for the Punjab government's subscription.
Unless the stock's rally resumes and pushes past that threshold before shares are actually issued, the government will be paying a premium over the prevailing market price for its stake, a detail that could shape how minority shareholders read the dilution impact of the deal once it closes.
The transaction remains contingent on shareholder approval at an EGM and clearance from both the SBP and SECP.
BOP has said further developments will be communicated to the exchange as the process advances.
Whether regulators or the exchange examine the trading pattern that preceded the disclosure and whether BOP's stock closes the gap to its Rs38.20 issue price before the first tranche lands by year-end, will be the two threads worth watching from here.
