August 10, 2026 (MLN): The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has illuminated its headquarters in Karachi to mark the historic Makkah Joint Defence Agreement signed between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye.

The agreement was signed on Friday, establishing a trilateral security framework aimed at strengthening collective defence and promoting regional stability among the three countries.

According to a joint statement, the pact is designed to reinforce collective deterrence against external aggression, with any armed attack on one of the three countries to be treated as an attack on all members of the agreement.

While the statement did not outline specific military commitments undertaken by each country, it said the agreement seeks to enhance collective security while promoting peace, security and stability across the region and beyond.

A Turkish official described the agreement as “purely defensive in nature,” saying it includes a collective defence clause committing the three countries to mutual support in defence-related situations, according to Reuters.

The official added that the agreement is not directed at any particular country, remains open to other regional states and does not replace or override existing bilateral or multilateral defence arrangements.

The agreement comes amid escalating regional tensions, including missile attacks targeting Gulf oil-exporting states and disruptions to energy shipments.

The three countries have also expressed growing concern over the deteriorating regional security environment, including the increasingly assertive military posture of Israel and Iran.

The Makkah Joint Defence Agreement marks a significant step toward enhanced security cooperation among Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye as the three countries seek to strengthen collective defence and contribute to peace and stability across the region.
