August 19, 2025 (MLN): The Government have urged farmers across the country to immediately prepare their lands for the September cultivation of sugarcane, a move seen as vital for boosting agricultural output and strengthening the national economy.

Sugarcane ranks among Pakistan’s most important cash crops after cotton, playing a crucial role in mitigating farmers’ financial constraints while contributing significantly to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), according to the agriculture (extension) department, as reported by APP.

The spokesman emphasized that timely land preparation and the adoption of modern farming practices are essential to ensure a successful sowing season.

Beyond its economic value, sugarcane provides raw material for sugar mills, chemical industries, and paper production, while its tops serve as a major source of fodder for livestock during winter shortages.

He noted that the crop also holds potential to ease Pakistan’s energy crisis through co-generation. To maximize yields, he further advised growers to adopt improved cultivation techniques, use healthy seed, apply balanced fertilizers, and focus on high-yield, disease-resistant varieties.

“September planting offers farmers an ideal opportunity to secure higher yields,” the spokesman said, warning that delays in cultivation often result in reduced productivity.

He urged growers to remain in contact with field officers for guidance on the latest cultivation methods.

Recommended varieties include CPF-237, CPF-243, CPF-244, CPF-245, CPF-246, CPF-247, CPF-248, CPF-249, CPF-250, CPF-251, CPF-252, CPF-253, HSF-240, HSF-242, SPF-213, SPF-234, SPF-245, CP43-33, CP72-2086, and CP77-400. These have shown strong resistance against pests and diseases while delivering higher yields and better sugar recovery rates.
