Govt pushes for cotton sector reforms

August 07, 2025 (MLN): The government is stepping up efforts to revive its cotton industry with authorities calling for coordinated, evidence-based and actionable measures to strengthen global competitiveness and boost farmers incomes.

At the fourth meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Essential Cash Crops held in Islamabad on Thursday, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar directed the Ministry of National Food Security to devise a detailed action plan.

The move aims to ensure that policy recommendations from previous meetings are translated into practical steps.

The committee carried out a comprehensive review of the cotton sector discussing strategies to enhance production and profitability.

Key focus areas included improving seed quality, promoting technology adoption and research, addressing climate-related risks and mobilizing stakeholders across the public and private cotton value chain.

The session was attended by the Minister for National Food Security, SAPM Tariq Bajwa senior officials from the Ministry of Commerce, FBR, MNFSR as well as representatives from provincial governments and other relevant organizations.
