March 31, 2026 (MLN): The government held a high-level meeting to advance plans for petroleum price reforms and the introduction of targeted subsidy mechanisms aimed at protecting vulnerable segments while ensuring fiscal stability.

The discussions focused on shifting from broad, generalized subsidies to more efficient, data-driven support systems, with an emphasis on transparency, accountability, and minimizing market distortions.

Officials also explored delivery options such as digital platforms, existing databases, and cash transfer systems to ensure subsidies reach deserving beneficiaries, according to a press release issued.

The meeting, chaired by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb at the Finance Division, was attended by key federal and provincial leadership, including Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Ahmed Bugti, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Finance Minister Muzzammil Aslam, along with federal ministers Ali Pervaiz Malik, Ahad Khan Cheema, and Shaza Fatima Khawaja.

Senior officials, including chief secretaries and federal secretaries from key ministries, also participated, with several attendees joining virtually.

In his opening remarks, the finance minister described the meeting as part of ongoing consultations guided by the country’s top political leadership to develop a coordinated and sustainable petroleum pricing strategy.

He stressed the need for close collaboration between the federal and provincial governments.

Participants shared proposals reflecting provincial capacities and socioeconomic realities, while agreeing on the importance of directing subsidies specifically to vulnerable groups.

The meeting concluded with a consensus to develop a working framework for a targeted subsidy system, which will be circulated among stakeholders for further input as provinces continue refining their proposals.
