April 29, 2026 (MLN):  Asia is expected to be the first region hit if global jet fuel supplies tighten amid escalating tensions linked to the Iran conflict, raising concerns for airlines heading into the peak summer travel season.

International Air Transport Association Director General Willie Walsh warned that carriers in the region could face early strain, with knock-on effects likely to spread worldwide, according to Reuters.

Airlines operating across Asia may begin adjusting flight schedules in anticipation of shortages, particularly if fuel distribution becomes restricted.

General Walsh noted that while Asia could feel the initial impact, Europe would likely follow, with Africa and Latin America experiencing pressure later.

Despite the potential disruptions, demand for travel remains strong.

He said passengers are still expected to fly in large numbers during the summer months, signaling a sharp contrast to the collapse in air travel seen during the COVID-19 pandemic.

To manage supply challenges, airlines and regulators in Europe may explore the temporary use of Jet A fuel as an alternative, though this would depend on swift regulatory approvals and safety clearances.

With Asia positioned at the center of the developing situation, industry leaders are closely watching fuel supply dynamics, as airlines work to balance strong passenger demand with growing operational uncertainty.

Compounding the uncertainty in energy markets, the UnitedArab Emirates is also set to exit the OPEC and the wider OPEC+ coalition.

The move marks a significant shift within the producer bloc, traditionally led by Saudi Arabia, and could weaken coordination among major oil exporters at a time of elevated geopolitical tensions.
