July 16, 2025 (MLN):The federal government has raised the price of petrol by Rs5.36 per litre to Rs272.15 for the next fortnight, effective July 16, 2025, according to a Monday notification issued by the Finance Division.

Meanwhile, the price of high-speed diesel (HSD) now stands at Rs284.35 per litre after a Rs11.37 increase.

The latest hike has exceeded earlier expectations, as petrol was projected to rise by Rs3–5 per litre but jumped by Rs5.36 instead.

Pakistan raises diesel rates as global oil prices climb; higher import premiums drive adjustment, fueling inflation concerns and prompting fare revisions by transporters.

Pakistan on Tuesday disclosed a hike in fuel prices for the upcoming fortnight beginning July 16, citing rising international oil rates and higher import premiums.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Finance, the ex-depot price of petrol will remain unchanged at Rs266.79 per litre, while high-speed diesel (HSD) will increase by Rs11.37 to PKR 284.35 per litre.

The revision follows an earlier increase on June 30, when petrol rose by PRs8.36 per litre.

Petrol is widely used in motorcycles, rickshaws and private vehicles, and the price hike is expected to squeeze middle- and lower-income households.

Diesel, which fuels heavy transport, agricultural machinery and trains, was last priced at Rs272.98 after a Rs10.39 jump earlier this month.

Economists warn that diesel’s price is particularly inflationary, impacting food transport and other essential supplies. Transporters have already started adjusting fares in response.

Despite zero general sales tax (GST) on petroleum products, the government is collecting nearly Rs98 per litre in total levies.

These include a petroleum development levy (PDL) of Rs78.02 on petrol and Rs77.01 on diesel and HOBC, a climate support levy (CSL) of Rs2.25 per litre, and customs duty of Rs20–21 per litre—applicable on both imported and locally refined fuels.

The new fuel prices will remain in effect from July 16 to July 31, 2025.

Earlier, on July 1, the government had raised petrol prices by Rs8.36 per litre to Rs266.79, and HSD by Rs10.39 to Rs272.98.
