August 8, 2025 (MLN): The Government has reaffirmed its
support for the timber trade sector while urging it to take a proactive role in
boosting forest growth nationwide.
This came during a meeting between Federal Minister for
Commerce Jam Kamal Khan and a delegation of the All-Pakistan Timber Traders
Association (APTTA), led by Chairman Muhammad Sharjil Goplani.
The delegation raised several concerns including banking
constraints, permit delays, shipment and documentation issues, and challenges
related to the Department of Plant Protection (DPP).
Chairman Goplani noted that only 1.9% of the country’s land
is forested far below the level required to meet national demand.
He identified the United States, Germany, Sweden, Finland,
the Philippines, and Canada as Pakistan’s primary timber suppliers.
In response, The Minister assured immediate government
action to address trade-related hurdles, particularly those involving permits
and documentation. He instructed relevant departments to resolve these issues
without delay.
Calling for a proactive approach, he further stressed the
importance of expanding local forest cover, especially on non-arable and
flood-prone lands in Balochistan and proposed the plantation of fast-growing
tree species such as Cano, Safeda, and Subabul (Subrus), and directed surveys
to identify suitable sites.
The APTTA also emphasized that timber is treated as an
essential item and benefits from customs duty exemptions a key factor
supporting Pakistan’s construction and furniture sectors.
