Electricity generation declines by 9.8% YoY in July

August 22, 2022, (MLN): Total power generation in the country decreased by 9.8% YoY to 14,151 GWh during July 2022 at a cost of Rs10.71 per unit, compared to 15,680 GWh in Jul 2021 at the cost of Rs6.47 per unit, monthly power production data released by the National Electric Power Authority (NEPRA) on Saturday showed.

However, on a sequential basis, the power generation inched higher by 2% against 13,876 GWh in June 2022.

Source-wise, during the month of July 2022, RLNG, Coal, RFO generation went down by 32.4%, 24.4% and 45.6%, YoY, respectively. On the other hand, Hydel, Nuclear, Gas, HSD and solar generation increased by 6%, 21.1%, 7.7%, 66.8% and 14.5% YoY, respectively.

Share-wise, power generation through hydel contributed the largest in July 2022, as it accounted for 35% (4,977 GWh) of total electricity.

This was followed by RLNG as it contributed 15% (2,120 GWh) of electricity with Rs28.29/kWh. While generation from nuclear was around 14.2% (2,010 GWh) of electricity at a price of Rs1.05/kWh.

With a share of 12.7%, power generation from coal was around 1,802 GWh at Rs20.22/ kWh fuel cost, Meanwhile, generation from gas-based power plants was around 1,466 GWh (10.4% of total generation) at the highest fuel cost of Rs9.96/ kWh.

RFOs-based energy contributed about 6.2% or 877 GWh of electricity at a price of Rs35.70/ kWh, while 3.7% or 519 GWh contribution came from Wind.

The bagasse accounted for 0.3% (41 GWh) of total electricity during the month at a price of Rs5.98/kWh.

Accordingly, an increase of Rs4.70/kWh over the reference fuel charges i.e. Rs6.29/kWh has been proposed by CPPA-G for the month of July 2022.

In this regard, a hearing is scheduled for the proposed adjustment on August 31, 2022, the notice added.
