EU pledges €545m to drive Africa’s clean energy transition

September 29, 2025 (MLN): The European Union is committing nearly €545 million (about $638m) to renewable energy projects across Africa, a move designed to expand electricity access, reinforce regional power grids, and accelerate the continent’s transition to clean power.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, in a message to the Global Citizen Festival alongside the UN General Assembly, underlined how decisions made in Africa will shape global climate progress, according to APP.

She stressed that a clean energy shift on the continent could unlock new jobs, economic growth, and stability while advancing international climate goals.

Africa holds vast renewable energy potential, yet nearly 600 million people remain without access to electricity.

The EU sees investments in clean power as critical for development, regional integration, and long-term stability.

Furthermore, the funding will be directed to projects in Ivory Coast, Cameroon, the Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Ghana, the Central African Republic, Madagascar, Mozambique, and Somalia.
