November 24, 2025 (MLN): Australian mining giant BHP Group confirmed on Monday that it has dropped a reported bid to acquire British rival Anglo American, which would have created the world’s largest copper miner, as APP reported.

The company made the declaration via a statement on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) website.

According to Bloomberg News, BHP had approached Anglo American with a takeover proposal in an effort to disrupt a competing bid from Canadian miner Teck Resources. However, Anglo reportedly rejected BHP’s offer.

“BHP continues to believe that a combination with Anglo American would have had strong strategic merits and created significant value for all stakeholders,” the company said in its statement.

Copper demand has surged globally in recent years, driven by the growing need for renewable energy technologies, electric vehicle batteries, and consumer electronics.

The metal is also essential in military hardware, including aircraft, and has seen increased demand from data centers and the artificial intelligence sector.

While BHP has stepped back from pursuing Anglo American, the competition for copper assets is likely to intensify as nations and industries pivot toward green energy and technological infrastructure.
