Asia markets open up in spite of hawkish Fed signal

March 22, 2022: Asian shares opened higher on Tuesday due to gains in banks, energy and mining stocks, even as investors braced for aggressive U.S. rate hikes and disruption of oil supplies.

Hong Kong stocks opened slightly higher with the benchmark Hang Seng Index up 0.46% at 21,319.19 points. Similarly in Japan, the benchmark Nikkei 225 opened up 0.98% at 27,091.32 points.

South Korea's benchmark KOSPI opened up 0.43% at 2,697.63 points as of 0023GMT.

U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell on Monday (March 21) flagged a more aggressive tightening of monetary policy than previously anticipated.
