December 29, 2023 (MLN): The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) generated approximately 34 billion units of low-cost, clean, and green hydel electricity in the year 2023, saving a significant Rs106 billion.

To note, if same quantum of electricity was to be generated through expensive, imported fossil fuels, the government would have incurred an additional cost of about Rs106bn.

The cost of WAPDA hydel electricity is only Rs3.51 per unit, constituting around 30% of the total electricity supplied to the National Grid.

This year's output exceeded the 2022's production of 31.8bn units, marking an increase of 2.2bn units.
