May 07, 2025 (MLN): U.S. President Donald Trump expressed concern over escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, calling the situation a “shame” following India’s missile strikes on Pakistan in response to the April 22 Pahalgam incident.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump remarked, “It’s a shame, we just heard about it. I guess people knew something was going to happen based on a little bit of the past. They’ve been fighting for a long time.”
He added, “I just hope it ends very quickly.”
The strikes marked one of the most intense flare-ups between the nuclear-armed neighbors in over two decades, as Reuters reported.
India blamed Pakistan for the April 22 attack that killed 26 people, while Pakistan denied involvement and called for an independent investigation.
Pakistan has stated it is preparing a response to India’s military action, which occurred early Wednesday Asia time (late Tuesday U.S. time).
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio posted on X that he is “monitoring the situation between India and Pakistan closely,” and reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to promoting a “peaceful resolution” between the two countries.
The Indian embassy in Washington confirmed that National Security Adviser Ajit Doval briefed Secretary Rubio on India’s military response during a recent call.
The U.S. State Department stated that it is engaging with both nations at multiple levels, as part of diplomatic efforts to ease tensions.
According to analysts, the United States may initially refrain from deeper involvement due to its ongoing diplomatic commitments in Ukraine and Gaza.
President Trump previously commented on India-Pakistan relations on April 25, saying, “They’ll get it figured out one way or the other.”
American officials have shown support for India following the April 22 attack, though none have directly blamed Pakistan.
Meanwhile, the Biden administration has urged both countries to de-escalate and pursue a “responsible solution” through dialogue.
