March 18, 2022 (MLN): The Ombudsman in Sindh has called upon Excise & Taxation Motor Registration Department officials on March 22, 2022 for the issuance of Number Plates of Motorcycles, Cars and Commercial Vehicle.

A report submitted to the provincial ombudsman in Sindh said the more than 1.6 million people have been waiting for the number plates of their cars and motorcycles since 2016, a report submitted to the provincial ombudsman in Sindh said.

Of these 1.6 million license plates, 1.3 million are for motorcycles and about 300,000 are for vehicles (commercial and non-commercial).

Sindh Ombudsman Ijaz Ali Khan on March 8 had taken a suo motu notice of non-issuance of more than 300,000 number plates from 2016 despite payment of required fee to the Excise and Taxation Department.

The ombudsman had also directed the excise and taxation department to submit a comprehensive report on Wednesday through its motor vehicle registration director.

Sources said that the ombudsman's office had asked the excise department for annual details of pending number plates, district wise data and details of action or policy formulated by the Sindh government for early issuance of pending number plates.

The ombudsman's office has also asked for a timeline for clearing a large number of pending number plates.

Excise officials submitted a reply yesterday but the ombudsman is not satisfied as it did not include district-wise data and a policy to remove this pile of pending number plates.
