November 28, 2023 (MLN): The proposed investment plan worth Rs484 billion of K-Electric will pave the way for a significant addition of over 1,200 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy to the city’s power grid, Aamir Ghaziani, KE’s CFO informed during a hearing session at the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) today.

KE has already spent Rs544bn ($4.4bn) to improve electricity in Karachi, propelling the city's power generation capacity by an astounding 1,957 megawatts, he added.

Meanwhile, the efficiency of the fleet has jumped from 30% in 2005 to 42% in 2023.

Speaking about the expectations and results of privatization, the management said that the fleet efficiency is expected to reach 49% with a new 900 MW RLNG plant.

Since privatization, transmission and distribution capacity doubled, and line losses halved.

In response to questions about improving the reliability of services, the company highlighted that it has invested in IT and tech-based interventions to modernize the infrastructure and improve service delivery.

These include pioneering initiatives such as the use of Geographical Information System (GIS) and the deployment of 60,000 smart meters enabling greater visibility over power consumption trends.

NEPRA today heard K-Electric’s petition for the grant of a non-exclusive distribution license and supplier license for the next 20 years to its service territory including Karachi, Dhabeji, Gharo in Sindh and Balochistan's Hub, Bela and Vinder regions.

Most of the conversation revolved around the tariff and seeking tariff benefits for industries based in Karachi. The participants expressed satisfaction with the network and associated services.
