May 16, 2024 (MLN): The Pakistani rupee (PKR) depreciated by 14 paisa against the US dollar in Thursday's interbank session as the currency settled the trade at PKR 278.4 per USD, compared to the previous session's closing of PKR 278.26 per USD.
The currency saw an intraday high (bid) of 278.65 and a low (ask) of 278.45.
In the open market, exchange companies quoted the dollar at 276.96 for buying and 279.45 for selling.
In comparison to major currencies, PKR lost 1.46 rupees against the Euro, closing at 302.71 compared to the previous value of 301.25.
The British Pound became expensive by 2.56 rupees closing at 353 compared to 350.45 from a day ago.
The Swiss franc saw gains of 1.95 rupees, closing at 309.3 compared to 307.36 from the previous session.
Against the Japanese Yen, PKR lost 2 paisa, closing at 1.8027 versus 1.7827 a day ago.
The Chinese Yuan gained 5 paisa, closing at 38.57 against 38.52 from the previous session.
The Saudi Riyal closed at 74.23 with a gain of 3.73 paisa from its value of 74.2 a day ago.
The U.A.E Dirham increased in value by 3.91 paisa from 75.8 a day ago to 75.76.
During the current financial year, PKR has appreciated against the Dollar by 7.59 rupees or 2.72%. While the current calendar year has seen PKR appreciate by 3.46 rupees or 1.24%.
In the Money Market, the benchmark 6 Month Karachi Interbank Bid and Offer rates fell by 21 bps to 21.1% and 21.35%.
The drop in yields is attributed to yesterday's auction in which the cut-off yields dropped by up to 49bps.
The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) conducted a reverse repo-based Open Market Operation (OMO) today, in which it cumulatively injected a total of Rs913.35 billion into the market.
