No extension on tax return deadline: FBR

September 21, 2024 (MLN): The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) will not extend the September 30, 2024, deadline for filing tax returns, FBR spokesperson Bakhtiar Muhammad said while speaking to a private news channel on Saturday. 

Last year, the deadline was pushed to October 31, but this time, the FBR is taking a stricter approach in light of the government's efforts to expand the tax net and tackle economic challenges.

Although the law allows individuals to request extensions through their respective tax commissioners for specific reasons, the overall deadline will not be extended beyond September 30.

The Spokesperson acknowledged that some taxpayers may face challenges in submitting their returns before the deadline.

However, individuals can request an extension by reaching out to their respective tax commissioners, as provided by law, he added.

These extensions will only be granted for specific reasons, and the overall deadline of September 30 will not be extended nationwide.

When asked about the potential for thousands missing the deadline, the FBR emphasized that the public had been forewarned.

With nine days remaining, the official reminded that taxpayers had a three-month window—from July 1 to September 30—to file their returns, stating, "If they intended to file, they would have done so by now."
