PKR edges up slightly against USD

March 17, 2026 (MLN): The Pakistani rupee (PKR) posted a slight gain against the US dollar on Tuesday, appreciating by 2.83 paisa (0.01%) to close at PKR 279.27 per USD in the interbank market, compared to the previous session’s closing of 279.30.

During the trading session, the currency moved within a narrow band, touching an intraday high of 279.30 and a low of 279.25.

In the open market, exchange companies quoted the dollar at PKR 279.00 for buying and PKR 280.35 for selling.

Against other major currencies, the rupee showed a weakening trend. It depreciated by 1.41 rupees (0.44%) versus the Euro to settle at 320.95, down from 319.55 in the previous session.

Similarly, the local unit declined against the British Pound by 1.53 rupees (0.41%), closing at 371.53 compared to 370.00 a day earlier.

The rupee also lost ground against the Swiss franc, falling by 81.68 paisa (0.23%) to 354.45.

Against the Japanese Yen, it edged lower by 0.09 paisa (0.05%) to 1.7542, while it weakened against the Chinese Yuan by 6.58 paisa (0.16%) to close at 40.54.

On the other hand, the rupee recorded modest gains against the Saudi Riyal, rising by 1.15 paisa (0.02%) to 74.42. However, it slipped slightly against the UAE Dirham by 0.67 paisa (0.01%) to 76.04.

On a cumulative basis, the rupee has strengthened by 4.49 against the US dollar during the current fiscal year, reflecting a gain of 1.61%. On a calendar year basis, it has improved by 84.99 paisa, or 0.30%.

Meanwhile, in the money market, the benchmark 6-month Karachi Interbank Bid and Offer rates increased by 30 basis points to 11.10% and 11.35%, respectively.
