February 08, 2025 (MLN): Electricity tariffs are set to decrease further for domestic consumers and industries as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif declared upcoming reforms in the power sector.
Chairing a review meeting on the power sector in Islamabad, he expressed satisfaction with the ongoing reforms, stating that they are yielding positive results.
Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed his commitment to providing affordable and environmentally friendly electricity.
He stated that renegotiating agreements with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) is helping save the national treasury while reducing electricity costs for consumers.
Referring to the campaign against power pilferage, the Prime Minister emphasized his commitment to intensifying efforts to fully eliminate losses across all distribution companies.
Shehbaz Sharif highlighted that appointing reputable board members from the private sector in electricity distribution companies is enhancing their performance.
He added that the reduction in transmission losses is a clear indication of the positive impact of ongoing reforms, according to the press release.
The meeting was informed that the recovery rate of distribution companies improved to 93.26% by December last year, as a result of reforms in the electricity sector and the anti-theft campaign.
Additionally, the meeting was briefed on the progress of the 500 kV Mitiari-Moro-Rahim Yar Khan and Ghazi Barotha-Faisalabad transmission line projects.
It was also updated on the dissolution of the National Transmission and Dispatch Company and the establishment of the new Energy Infrastructure, Development, and Management Company (EIDMC).
The Prime Minister directed that all reforms and projects be completed within the designated timeframe.
