September 11, 2024 (MLN): The government has fixed the period of ordinary family pension at 10 years after the death of the retired employee, while in the case of a special child, the family pension will continue for the child's lifetime.

The finance ministry has introduced major amendments to the existing pension scheme based on the recommendations of Pay and Pension Commission 2020, as outlined in three separate Regulations notices.

"It has been decided that henceforth, Ordinary Family Pension, after the death or ineligibility of the spouse, shall be admissible to remaining entitled family members for a maximum period of 10 years," reads one of the regulatory notices.

In the case of disabled or special children of a pensioner, the Ordinary Family Pension will be payable for the lifetime of such children, the notice added.

For entitled children, the Ordinary Family Pension will be payable for 10 years or until the age of 21, whichever is later.

Existing instructions on this subject will be amended accordingly, with immediate effect, the notice added.

Moreover, it has been decided that, henceforth, Special Family Pension, after the death or ineligibility of the spouse or first recipient, will be payable to the remaining entitled family members for 25 years after the death or ineligibility of the spouse or first recipient.

In the case of disabled or special children of a pensioner, the Special Family Pension will be payable for the lifetime of such children.

The rate of such pension for eligible recipients is increased to 50% of the last drawn pension of the first recipient for all ranks of Armed Forces/Civil Armed Forces, with no minimum or maximum limits.

This pension is transferable to all eligible heirs as prescribed in Rule 12 of Pension Regulations Vol-I (Armed Forces), 2010.

Existing instructions on this subject will be amended accordingly, with immediate effect, the notice reads.
