Govt borrows Rs308bn debt in a week

April 03, 2025 (MLN): The government of Pakistan has acquired an additional debt of Rs308.27 billion during the week ended March 21, 2025, which brings its total net borrowing for ongoing fiscal year 2025 to Rs603.25bn, according to the central bank's weekly estimates.

The government sector borrowings are divided into three broad categories based on the purpose of loan which are budgetary support, commodity operations, and others.

Split three ways between these broad categories, the weekly net borrowing for budgetary support was Rs303.52bn, while the borrowing for commodity operations stood at Rs1.94bn.

Similarly, a total of Rs2.8bn was borrowed for others during the week.

Accordingly, this takes the cumulative borrowing for the current fiscal year 2025 to Rs902.89bn for budgetary support, Rs301.69bn retirement off Commodity Operations, and Rs2.05bn borrowing for others.

The two biggest sources of financing for budgetary support are the State Bank of Pakistan and the scheduled banks.

This fiscal year, the government has paid off a net sum of Rs406.7bn to the central bank, out of which the Federal Government borrowed Rs125.29bn whereas, the Provincial Government retired Rs477.17bn, AJK Government retired Rs38.11bn, and the GB Government retired Rs16.72bn.

On the other hand, the government has lent out a net total of Rs1.31tr to scheduled banks. Out of this amount, the Federal Government borrowed Rs1.52tr while the Provincial Government retired Rs206.25bn.
