March 28, 2025 (MLN): The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has missed its tax revenue collection target for March 2025 by over Rs100 billion.

The tax collection stood at Rs1.1 trillion till March 27, 2025, against the target of Rs1.22tr, reflecting a shortfall of over Rs120bn.

Overall, the FBR collected Rs8.44tr during the first nine months (July-March) of FY25 against the target of Rs9.17tr.

This resulted in an overall shortfall of approximately Rs723bn in revenue collection between July and March 2025 of the current fiscal year, according to the press release issued today.

With this shortfall, the FBR is expected to face significant challenges in meeting the revised annual tax collection target of Rs12.33tr for the current fiscal year.

The task ahead is described as herculean, given the ongoing revenue gap.

To boost tax collection before the close of March, the government has instructed the FBR to open its field offices on Saturday, the last working day of the month.

Authorities anticipate collecting an additional Rs17 to Rs20bn in revenue before the month ends.

It is pertinent to mention that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has also revised downward the annual tax collection target of FBR from Rs12.91tr to Rs12.33tr.
