Energy reforms underway for competitive, reliable supply: Khurram Schehzad

March 29, 2025 (MLN): Energy reforms are underway to ensure competitive and reliable energy, said Advisor to the Finance Minister, Khurram Schehzad.  

The cost of capital is being reduced to make financing more affordable for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) and maximize economic impact, he added

Pakistan’s economy is undergoing significant reforms and key changes, he further noted.

He outlined various measures being taken to address economic challenges and drive progress.

Schehzad stated that tax distortions are being corrected, terming the introduction of an agriculture tax a historic achievement.

Additionally, retail, wholesale, and trade sectors are being brought into the tax net, while real estate taxes are being rationalized.

He emphasized that taxation is not merely for collection but for setting economic direction, with a clear separation between policy and collection.

Rightsizing measures are being implemented for efficiency and true devolution.

Progress is being made on pension and state-owned enterprise (SOE) reforms, while privatization efforts have gained momentum.

Schehzad outlined the government’s core responsibilities, stating that it has only three key jobs, including providing a policy framework, ensuring continuity, and creating an investable environment.

He stressed that political stability remains crucial and assured that efforts are being made in this regard.

"We are trying our best, and, most of all, we are positive and hopeful," he concluded.
