Electricity generation drops for second consecutive year

July 22, 2024 (MLN): The total power generation in the country decreased by 1.3% to 127,843 GWh during fiscal year 2023-24, according to data released by National Electric Power Authority (NEPRA).
That compares with an electricity generation of 129,592 GWh in the previous year and an average yearly generation of 129,538 GWh in the past five years.
Moreover, in the month of June 2024 alone, electricity generation fell 1.9% YoY to 13,461 GWh as compared to 13,715 GWh in the same month of last year.
On a month-over-month basis, the total power generation increased by 6.7% compared to 12,618 GWh in May 2024.
Meanwhile, the average fuel cost for power generation declined by 11% YoY to Rs8.61/KWh in June 2024 compared to Rs9.63/KWh during June 2023.

During the year, generation through Coal, HSD, RFO, Gas, Nuclear, Import from Iran, Mixed, Wind, Bagasse, and Solar registered a year-on-year decrease of 3.4%, 53%, 54.1%, 17.9%, 0.3%, 18.7%, 98.5%, 2.3%, 14%, and 3.4% respectively, compared with the figures in last year.
On the other hand, the production of Hydel and RLNG jumped by 9.6% and 6.5% YoY, respectively.
Share-wise, Hydel held the majority share of electricity generation during the year, clocking in at 31.1%
This was followed by Nuclear with 18.8%, RLNG with 18.5%, Coal with 15.7%, and Gas with 9.3%.
