ECP opts for Delimitation, delays expected elections

August 17, 2023 (MLN): The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has approved to go for a fresh delimitation of constituencies in accordance with the results of the 7th Population and Housing Census-2023.

Contrary to the anticipated schedule of holding the general elections within 90 days after the dissolution of the National Assembly, the fresh delimitation of constituencies is expected to take around four months, with the final publication of Delimitation to be released on December 14, 2023.

The process begins with the freezing of boundaries of Administrative Units across the country. The Election Commission will issue a directive for this purpose on August 17, 2023.

Subsequently, a Delimitation Committee will be established for each province, including Islamabad, by August 21, 2023.

Administrative arrangements will be carried out between August 22 and August 31, 2023.

These arrangements involve the requisition of maps on a prescribed scale, along with necessary data and descriptions of Districts, Tehsils, etc., from Provincial Governments.

Additionally, District Census Reports (DCRs), digitized maps of Census Charges, Circles, and Blocks, along with descriptions from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), will be obtained.
