Breakup of trade data in Apr: PBS

May 16, 2025 (MLN): Pakistan’s trade deficit in April 2025 increased by 35.79% YoY, standing at $3.39 billion compared to $2.49bn in April 2024, according to data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).

On a month-on-month (MoM) basis the deficit rose by 55.2%, compared to $2.18bn in March 2025.

The trade deficit widened in April 2025 as imports surged 14.09% YoY to $5.52bn, despite an 14.52% MoM decline.

In April 2025, Pakistan's exports stood at $2.14bn, reflecting a 19.05% decrease from $2.64bn in March 2025.

Cumulatively, in the first ten months of the fiscal year 2024-25, the trade deficit increased by 8.81%, rising to $21.3bn compared to $19.62bn in 10MFY24.

In terms of Rupees, the balance of trade in April 2025 was (-)Rs963.89 billion, while the cumulative balance of trade from July to April 2024-25 stood at (-)Rs5.96 trillion and in dollar terms (-)$21.39bn.

Exports

Exports from Pakistan during April 2025 amounted to Rs611.28bn (provisional) as against Rs740.8bn in March 2025 and Rs653.95bn during April 2024, showing a decrease of 17.48% over March 2025 and of 6.52% over April 2024.

In terms of US dollars, the exports in April, 2025 totaled $2.17bn (provisional) as compared to $2.64bn in March, 2025 showing a decrease of 17.66% over March, 2025 and of 7.36% as compared to $2.35bn in April, 2024.

Exports during July–April, 2024-25 totaled Rs7.49tr (provisional) as against Rs7.17tr during the corresponding period of last year showing an n increase of 4.51%.

In terms of US dollars, the exports during July–April, 2024 - 2025 totaled $26.89bn (provisional) against $25.27bn during the corresponding period of last year showing an increase of 6.40%.

The main export commodities during April, 2025 were Knitwear (Rs93.45bn), Readymade garments (Rs84.97bn), Bed wear (Rs54.92bn), Rice others (Rs45.07bn), Cotton cloth (Rs35.47bn), Towels (Rs23.75bn), Madeup articles (excl towels & bedwear) (Rs15.3bn), Fish & fish preparations, (Rs13.47bn), Basmati Rice (Rs12.84bn) and Petroleum products (excl top naphta) (Rs12.8bn).

Imports

Imports into Pakistan during April, 2025 amounted to Rs1.57tr (provisional) as against Rs1.35tr in March, 2025 and Rs1.34tr during April, 2024 showing an increase of 16.48% over March, 2025 and of 16.87% over April, 2024.

In terms of US dollars, the imports in April, 2025 totaled $5.6bn (provisional) as compared to $4.8bn in March, 2025 showing an increase of 16.22% over March, 2025 and of 15.79% as compared to $4.8bn in April, 2024.

During July–April, 2024 - 2025 totaled Rs13.46tr (provisional) as against Rs12.73tr during the corresponding period of last year showing an increase of 5.75%.

In US dollar terms, imports during July–April, 2024-25 totaled $48.29bn (provisional) as against $44.9bn during the corresponding period of last year showing an increase of 7.55%.

The main import commodities during April, 2025 were Petroleum crude (Rs151.47bn), Electrical machinery & apparatus (Rs150.19bn), Petroleum products (Rs139.11bn), Palm oil (Rs83.674bn), Iron and steel (Rs70.92bn), Natural gas liquified (LNG) (Rs66.04bn), Plastic materials (Rs64.1bn), Raw cotton (Rs56.96bn), Iron and steel scrap (Rs42.02bn) and Motor cars (Rs38.69bn).
