March 31, 2026 (MLN): Rising temperatures across China have ushered in spring across much of the country, fueling a surge in seasonal consumption and giving momentum to a rapidly growing “spring economy” that is boosting markets nationwide.

Demand for fresh spring vegetables has become a key driver of this trend, with items such as Chinese toon sprouts, bamboo shoots and shepherd’s purse selling quickly both online and in physical markets.

Many products are selling out within hours as consumer interest spikes. Since mid-March, search volume for spring vegetables on the e-commerce platform Meituan has increased by 17.4% year-on-year, highlighting strong enthusiasm for seasonal foods, APP reported.

At the same time, spring-related spending is expanding beyond food into tourism, dining and cultural experiences. A notable development is the rise of the “ticket-stub economy,” where tickets from events, sports matches or transportation can be reused for discounts or benefits, effectively extending spending chains.

This model gained traction during the WTT Champions Chongqing 2026 event, where visitors combined attending matches with spring outings. Event tickets were used to access discounts at tea gardens, restaurants and scenic locations, encouraging broader consumption. Local businesses reported significant gains, with some restaurants experiencing a threefold increase in table turnover during the event.

Spring consumption is also evolving in the dining sector, where seasonal and flower-based cuisine is gaining popularity.

In Kunming, restaurants are incorporating edible flowers into menus, offering dishes such as flower omelets, stir-fries and hot pots.

Businesses are also hosting themed banquets and educational activities to further stimulate interest in seasonal dining.

In tourism, innovative experiences are emerging to attract visitors.

In Jintang County near Chengdu, vast rapeseed flower fields are drawing crowds, with low-altitude sightseeing programs such as hot air balloon rides offering panoramic views of the landscape. These experiences are often paired with local markets, cultural performances and specialty foods, creating more immersive tourism offerings.

As cities continue to integrate seasonal scenery with commerce, dining and cultural activities, the spring economy is becoming an increasingly important engine for consumption growth and economic vitality across China.
