Australia to provide AUD 3m for Pakistan's water project

October 11, 2024 (MLN): Pakistan has signed a Memorandum of Subsidiary Agreement with Australia on 'Climate Resilient and Adaptive Water Allocation in Pakistan,' under which Australia will provide AUD 3 million for the project, to be completed over a period of five years, ending in 2029.

After the approval of the Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Cheema, the Secretary of Economic Affairs Dr. Kazim Niaz signed the Memorandum long with Chief Executive of the Australian Center for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) Prof. Wendy Umberger.

This research project aims to improve canal water reliability in Pakistan by enhancing water allocation decisions and practices.

The goal is to update the Water Apportionment Accord Tool to include mid-season planning and operations, explore on-farm water storage options, and ultimately achieve climate resilience, adaptive management, and equitable water use, leading to better social and economic outcomes for farming communities.

The Secretary, Ministry of Economic Affairs thanked the Australian Government for extending its continuous support to the Government of Pakistan in its efforts towards development of agricultural sector of the country.
