Petrol, HSD prices drop Rs22 per litre

May 29, 2026 (MLN): The government has reduced the price of petrol and that of high-speed diesel (HSD) by Rs22 per litre on Friday, according to a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO).

Petrol, which previously stood at Rs403.78 per litre, will now be available at Rs381.78, while HSD has been brought down from Rs402.78 to Rs380.78 per litre.

The reduction was driven by a sharp drop in the average Platts price the international benchmark inclusive of incidentals and duty  which fell to Rs288.36 for HSD and Rs261.97 for PMG on May 30, compared to Rs322.28 and Rs277.06 respectively on May 23.

The ex-refinery price for HSD consequently dropped to Rs288.36 per litre, while petrol's ex-refinery rate settled at Rs263.95, reflecting an additional PSO exchange adjustment of Rs1.98.

Levy and margin components remained largely unchanged. The Petroleum Levy (PL) for HSD was revised upward to Rs68.93 from Rs58, partially offsetting the international price decline, while petrol's PL was adjusted down to Rs91.34 from Rs102.17.

Distributor and dealer margins held steady at Rs7.87 and Rs8.64 per litre respectively for both fuels. Sales tax remained at zero percent, keeping the Max Depot Price equivalent to the pre-tax total.

The decision was taken to provide relief to the public, according to the PMO statement.

The price reductions come as welcome news for the transport sector, daily commuters, and businesses that rely heavily on fuel for their operations.
