Weekly SPI increases by 0.02%

June 05, 2025 (MLN): Pakistan's short-term inflation increased by 0.02% compared to the previous week, while it fell by 0.02% compared to the same period last year, the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reported on Friday. 

During the week, out of 51 items, prices of 18 (35.29%) items increased, 06 (11.77%) items decreased, and 27 (52.94%) items remained stable.

Increase is observed in the prices of Tomatoes (16.94%), Potatoes (11.52%), Onions (5.21%), Bananas (1.57%), Eggs (1.34%), Sugar (1.24%), Rice Basmati Broken (1.02%), Gur (0.81%), Pulse Masoor (0.65%), Milk Fresh (0.47%), Pulse Mash (0.46%), Pulse Gram (0.44%) and Petrol (0.41%).

On the other hand, major decrease is observed in the prices of Chicken (11.22%), Garlic (3.71%), LPG (0.76%), Vegetable Ghee 1kg (0.24%), Vegetable Ghee 2.5 kg (0.10%) and Cooking Oil 5 litre (0.02%). 


The year-on-year trend depicts a decrease of 0.02%. The major increase is observed in Ladies Sandal (55.62%), Eggs (35.36%), Pulse Moong (31.74%), Powdered Milk (23.82%), Sugar (23.51%), Beef (17.51%), Bananas (17.29%), Pulse Gram (15.91%), Chicken (15.88%), LPG (15.31%), Vegetable Ghee 2.5Kg (13.56%) and Vegetable Ghee 1Kg (12.49%).

While major decrease is observed in the prices of Onions (64.90%), Electricity Charges for Q1 (36.54%), Garlic (27.79%), Potatoes (23.15%), Tomatoes (18.10%), Pulse Mash (17.99%), Tea Lipton (17.93%), Wheat Flour (14.10%), Chilies Powder (5.74%), Diesel (5.68%), Rice Irri (5.56%), Pulse Masoor (5.47%) and Petrol (5.41%).

The lowest income group experienced a weekly increase of 0.28%, while the inflation for the highest income group down by 0.05%.

On a yearly basis, analysis of SPI change across different income segments showed that SPI remained across all quantiles ranging between 1.55% and 1.11%.

Yearly SPI for the Lowest Income Group decreased by 0.75% while the highest income group increased by 1.11%.

The average price of Sona urea stood at Rs4,460 per 50 kg bag, down by 0.16% from last week’s price, and a 6.03% decrease from last year.

Meanwhile, the average Cement price fell to Rs1,412 per 50 kg bag, which is 0.40% lower than the previous week, and 12.52% higher than prices last year.

PBS calculates short-term inflation using the SPI on a weekly basis to assess the price movement of essential commodities at shorter interval of time so as to review the price situation in the country.

SPI comprises 51 essential items collected from 50 markets in 17 cities of the country.
