Singapore remains top foreign investor in Pakistan in July’21

August 17, 2021 (MLN): Singapore remained the top foreign direct investor in Pakistan, with a total investment of $16.4 million in the first month of FY22 i.e, July’21.

Figures compiled by State bank of Pakistan (SBP) revealed that the inflows from Singapore were recorded at $19.7mn during July’21, portraying a surge of more than 8x, against $2.3mn inflows in July’20.

During Jul’21, the five largest contributors of foreign direct investment in Pakistan were Singapore, United States, Hongkong, United Kingdom, and China.

United States emerged as the second leading foreign investor in Pakistan as its net direct investment into Pakistan amounted to $14.9mn in the month of July, followed by Hongkong with $12.3mn, UK with $9.1mn, and China with $6.6mn.

To note, FDI inflows from the China fell to $21.9mn in July’21 from $48.5mn in July’20, depicting a decline of 55% YoY.

On the other hand, Foreign Portfolio Investment (FPI), which represents an investment in the equity market shown a negative picture, as net FPI outflows stood at $1.1 million in July’21. Sweden emerged as the biggest withdrawal of portfolio investment during the month, as it withdrew $4.8mn during July’21.

UAE appeared as the largest contributor in portfolio investment with $2.6mn.
