September 23, 2025 (MLN): The Sindh government, with support from the World Bank, has started accelerating work on the Yellow Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project in Karachi, with the Senator Taj Haider Bridge set to open to the public within a week.

During a visit to review development work on Tuesday, Sindh Senior Minister for Information, Transport and Mass Transit Sharjeel Inam Memon said construction of depots and other related infrastructure is progressing at full pace, according to APP.

He emphasized that the Pakistan People’s Party-led provincial government is committed to providing modern travel facilities to the people of Karachi.

As part of new initiatives, the government will distribute “Pink Scooters” free of charge this week to facilitate women commuters. A fleet of double-decker and electric buses is also expected to arrive in Karachi in the coming weeks.

Memon highlighted that President Asif Ali Zardari’s recent visit to China paved the way for talks on setting up local manufacturing plants for electric and conventional buses in Sindh.

The move, he said, would not only boost the transport sector but also create employment opportunities. Chinese investors have also shown strong interest in the Dhabeji Special Economic Zone, where new industries are expected to be established.

The minister acknowledged that large-scale projects like the Yellow Line and Red Line often face delays due to utility transfers, pointing out disputes with PTCL and K-Electric.

He assured that the government is actively addressing these issues and has directed authorities to resolve the current dispute with K-Electric within 24 hours.

Looking ahead, Memon announced that after the inauguration of the Taj Haider Bridge, the Jam Sadiq Bridge will be demolished and reconstructed with modern facilities, including separate tracks for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists.

He further noted that President Zardari’s China visit also included detailed discussions on energy, agriculture, and solid waste management, describing the trip as “highly successful” and a precursor to new projects in these sectors.
