June 24, 2025 (MLN): Port Qasim Authority (PQA) has declared a 50% reduction in port charges for exporters, in line with the government’s reform agenda aimed at enhancing trade and driving economic growth.

The announcement came during a strategic roadmap meeting of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, chaired by Federal Minister Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry.

In his address, the minister reiterated the government’s resolve to create new opportunities for local businesses and promote domestic trade through ports and fisheries.

Highlighting ongoing reforms, Minister Chaudhry noted that the reduction in charges at Port Qasim reflects a strong commitment to trade facilitation and economic development, particularly in coastal regions.

He also unveiled plans to establish an Aquaculture Industrial Zone to support marine and aquaculture sector activities, as per the press release issued.

The minister revealed that Pakistan’s first-ever Marine and Aquaculture Policy will soon be introduced to provide a structured framework for sustainable development.

The meeting further reported that the Marine Fisheries Department had met its export target of $410 million through fisheries and aquaculture exports.

Additionally, the ship recycling industry generated revenue of Rs6 billion, indicating the sector’s rising potential.

Emphasizing the importance of global environmental trends, Minister Chaudhry underlined the government’s focus on green shipping initiatives to reduce ecological impact and encourage sustainable maritime practices.

He added that efforts are underway to modernize port infrastructure, streamline customs procedures, and foster a business-friendly environment.

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs is actively pursuing a reform strategy to harness the economic potential of Pakistan’s coastline and maritime resources.

These initiatives aim to transform the sector, boost exports, and make a significant contribution to the national GDP.
