April 21, 2026 (MLN): The government has emphasized
that Pakistan can significantly boost its exports by combining skills
development, e-commerce integration, and gradual formalization of the economy,
while ensuring a level playing field for compliant businesses.
Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan said the
country has strong potential for export-led growth, particularly in textiles,
leather, and value-added recycled products, adding that connecting local talent
and industry with global markets through policy support and digital platforms
is key, according to a press release issued.
The remarks were made during a meeting with a delegation of
business leaders and development practitioners led by Taimur Siddique, Director
Shahi Group.
The meeting was also attended by Nawabzada Mir Muhammad
Zarain Khan Magsi, Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism and Culture,
Balochistan, along with representatives from the textile, leather, and trade
sectors.
The minister highlighted Karachi’s advantages, including
port connectivity, skilled labor, and an established industrial base, and
stressed that while training initiatives are important, they must be linked
with market access. He emphasized the role of e-commerce in enabling export
opportunities, particularly for remote areas.
Participants shared examples of grassroots initiatives such
as stitching and vocational training centers in Balochistan, where young women
are producing export-quality goods, generating income at the local level.
The discussion also covered innovative marketing strategies,
including storytelling-based branding that links products with social impact
narratives like community development and women empowerment to enhance global
appeal.
Jam Kamal Khan said traditional sectors such as carpet
weaving and handicrafts can be revitalized through digital platforms, noting
that e-commerce offers new opportunities for scaling these industries
sustainably.
On policy measures, he reiterated the government’s
commitment to improving ease of doing business, including rationalizing
export-related charges, streamlining regulations, and addressing issues such as
tax refunds to improve exporters’ liquidity.
He also emphasized the need to tackle challenges posed by
the informal sector, stating that undocumented businesses create unfair
competition. Strengthening documentation and enforcement, he added, would
improve competitiveness and attract investment.
The meeting concluded with a commitment to strengthen public-private collaboration, promote digital trade ecosystems, and create a more enabling environment for businesses and entrepreneurs.
