February 3, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan’s more than 240 significant wetlands, covering an estimated 10% of the country’s land area, are crucial for protecting the Arabian Sea, supporting marine biodiversity, and sustaining the national blue economy.

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said on World Wetlands Day.

Some studies identify exactly 225 key wetlands across the country.

In his message marking the day, observed this year under the theme “Wetlands and Traditional Knowledge: Celebrating Cultural Heritage,” the minister highlighted the importance of wetlands in Pakistan.

He noted that ecosystems such as mangroves, estuaries, tidal flats, and coastal lagoons act as frontline defenses against climate change impacts, including flooding, coastal erosion, and sea-level rise, according to the press release.

“These ecosystems act as natural buffers that protect coastal communities, ports, and infrastructure while maintaining water quality and ecological balance in marine environments,” Chaudhry said.

He emphasized the importance of coastal wetlands, particularly the Indus Delta mangroves, which serve as essential breeding and nursery grounds for fish and other marine species.

The health of these wetlands directly supports fisheries, aquaculture, and food security.

“Healthy wetlands are essential for sustaining marine biodiversity and ensuring the long-term viability of livelihoods dependent on fishing and aquaculture,” the minister added.

Junaid Chaudhry also highlighted the role of traditional and indigenous knowledge in wetland conservation, noting that coastal communities in Sindh and Balochistan have historically practiced sustainable fishing and mangrove protection.

He called for integrating this local wisdom into modern environmental and maritime policies to enhance ecosystem resilience.

According to the minister, wetlands form the cornerstone of the blue economy by enabling fisheries, maritime trade, eco-tourism, and climate resilience.

They reduce disaster risks, enhance natural productivity, and provide cost-effective solutions for economic growth and environmental protection.

Junaid Chaudhry called for heightened public awareness, stronger conservation measures, and greater community involvement to protect wetlands for future generations.

He emphasized that these ecosystems are crucial for maintaining a healthier marine environment and supporting a more resilient national economy.
